American Baptist Women’s Ministries

There are two circles available for a woman (member or non-member of the church) who wishes to be a member.

These Circle are:

Ona Eggleston Circle which meets the 1st Tuesday of every month at either noon or 6:00 pm. The time is always posted in advance. We either meet in homes or at the church whichever the hostess prefers. Our program consists of a devotional, Love Gift, and the main program.

Viergie West/Rachel West Circle meets at the church on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 10:00 am.

Our circles have several projects including:

  • Camp Happy Valley
  • Remember shut-ins with gifts, cards, and visits
  • Scholarship girls
  • White Cross quotas
  • Sunshine baskets
  • Bible reading program
  • Quarters for Weirton Christian Center
  • Christmas baskets Quilts for missionaries and the needy
  • Adopt a needy family at Christmas
  • Love Gift fund
  • State projects
  • National projects

American Baptist Men’s Ministry

American Baptist Men is part of National Ministries Disaster Response network. Together with the Office of National Disaster Response and volunteers in Mission, AB Men bring hope to those whose lives have been devastated by disasters in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

AWANA Ministry

Reaching boys and girls (2 years to grade 6) with the gospel of Christ and training them to serve Him.

Approved Workman Are Not Ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15)

This program focuses on bible memorization (Psalm 119:11).

Leaders are needed to teach, listen to, and assist the children in completing their responsibilites. Training for AWANA leaders is available and strongly encouraged. AWANA leaders serve from 6:45 pm to 8:15 pm on Wednesday nights during the school year. Contact person Sandi Payne.

Children’s Library Ministry

The Children’s Library, located up the steps to the back of the Fellowship Hall, is designed to educate and entertain young minds with the gospel message through books, videos, DVD’s, and CD’s. The library is open during church hours for anyone to check out material and return to the library box when finished.

Chrisitians on Purpose (COP’s)

COP’s is a non-denominational women’s group that meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month for fellowship, dessert, and devotion. We meet informally at a home of one of the group. We work together in ares of community and church need including the “Shut-In” meals monthly, Christmas baskets and other needs that arise throughout the year. We also assist in planning and organizing the church’s Fall Festival and other children’s and church-wide events.

Community Food Pantry

If you would like to volunteer at the Community Cupboard in Hurricane or need assistance, contact Connie Hale.

Decorating Committe

Our decorating committee meets every other month and decorates the church for holidays and special occasions.

Discipleship Ministry

Currently our discipleship ministry consists of a Sunday School class taught by Pastor David called “The Discovery Class.” This class is designed to develop disciples with answers about basic Christian doctrine and understandings of Baptist tradition and beliefs. These classes are offered on a rotating basis every nine weeks.

WV Fellowship of Christian Athletes

The mission of the WV Fellowship of Christian Athletes is “to present to students, athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, serving Him in their relationships, and in the fellowship of the church.”Through Associate Pastor David White, Mount Vernon is actively involved in this ministry.

Gideon Ministry

This ministry consists of business and professional men who participate in the distribution of Bibles to motels, schools, and prisons and some are trained to promote this ministry through church visitation.

Greeters Ministry

The goal of this ministry if to create a positive impression by providing a warm friendly atmosphere to all worshipers as they enter the church facilities. This includes providing directions to visitors, answering questions concerning church ministries, handing them worship bulletins, and assisting in any other way necessary.

Home Department Ministry

The Home Department is an outreach ministry to the shut-ins of our church. During the course of the year contacts are made through the regular mailings of cards, bulletins, Sunday School quarterlies and Devotionals and fruit baskets are delivered at Christmas, also the Deacon Board regularly serves communion to our shut-ins.

Kids on Missions

This program is for kids in the 1st-6th grades. Each week we “visit” a different country and learn about life there and what missionaries are doing in that part of the world are doing to spread the word of God. Kids on Missions meet on Sunday evenings at 6:00 pm.

Live Embers

This ministry is for our senior adult men and women (55+) and meets once a month on the second Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm. Special events, dinners and trips are also a part of this ministry all designed to provide fellowship, develop and strengthen relationships, and encourage Christian witness.

Parking Lot Ministry

The goal of this ministry is to create a positive impression by providing a warm and friendly atmosphere to all worshipers as they drive into the parking area of our church. Attendants help coordinate the flow of traffic and guide everyone into respective parking spaces. They assist the handicapped and those with special needs, and sometimes direct pedestrian traffic in the parking lot before and after worship services, large weddings, and special events.

Prayer Chain Ministry

This ministry consists of a group of prayer warriors who, when called upon, pray for the needs of those mentioned.

Precept Ministry

Kay Arthur’s Precept Ministries International is dedicated to equipping people with tools to discover truth for themselves by studying God’s Word inductively through observation, interpretation, and application. Precept’s method uses an investigative approach that takes each person to the biblical text directly. This innovative Bible Study meets every Monday evening at the church at 6:OO pm.

Resource Center (Adult Library) Ministry

The Adult/Youth Library at Mount Vernon provides a rich variety of Christian resources for church members. through a combination of budgeted funds and donated materials, books on tape, Christian music, movies on VHS and DVD, fiction and non-fiction Christian literature for both adults and youth. All items are available for check out via an honor system. Donations of good condition material are welcome at any time.

S.A.L.T.

Sound and Lighting Team

The purpose of this ministry is to coordinate all sound and technical support for worship services and events. All services are recorded and duplication for distribution to church members is available.

Sunday School

Our Sunday School Program, which begins at 9:45 every Sunday morning, is divided into three divisions. The divisions available are adult, children, and youth.

I. The adult department classes are:

Philathea – All ladies

Win One – All ladies

Friendship – Men and Women

Upper Room – Men and Women

Men’s Bible – All Men

Sam’s (Single’s class) – Men and Women

Sanctuary – Men and Women

College and Career – Men and Women

The Discovery Class (See Discipleship Ministry)

II. The Children’s Department is divided into seven divisions:

Nursery – Birth up to two years

Ages 2?s and 3?s

Ages 4?s and 5?s

1st and 2nd grade

3rd, 4th, and 5th grade boys

3rd, 4th, and 5th grade girls

III. The Youth Department is divided into two sections:

The Middle School classes are offered to boys and girls in the sixth through eighth grade.

The High School classes are available to boys and girls in the nighth through twelfth grade.

We have Children’s Church during the 11:00 am worship hour every Sunday. This ministry is for boys and girls in Kindergarten through the fifth grade.

Transportation and Van Minitsry

This ministry’s goal is to provide safe, dependable transportation support to any church sponsored trip or outing. This could also, but not necessarily, include being available for providing transportation assistance for those wishing to attend worship services who otherwise would be unable to do so.

Ushering Committee

Ushers minister through creating a positive impression by providing a warm friendly atmosphere to worshipers, assist in seating arrangements and help in making sure the services run smoothly. In addition, each Usher will serve in receiving the offerings and remain available to provide assistance, when necessary, during and after the worship service.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School at Mount Vernon is usually held during the beginning of June. VBS at Mount Vernon is for everyone, not just the kids. We have classes for all ages, newborn through adult. The dinner served by Sunday School classes each night is a great time of fellowship

Visitation Ministry

This Deacon led church-wide outreach ministry focuses on contacting all visitors to our church from the previous month. Participants are teamed together for visitation and commit to one night a month. Other types of follow up might include letter writing and phone calls.

This goal of this ministry is to Build and Maintain the Church’s presence on the internet.

Worship and Music Ministry

Musicians – We are always looking for people who play an instrument and would like to participate in worship service and Praise Band Activities.

Adult Choir – We need people who would like to join us in singing praises to God during the 11am worship service and during special holidays. We practice after the Sunday evening service at 7:15pm on the gym stage.

Kids Choir – Voices and helpers are needed to participate in this fun ministry. The Kids Choir practices during a portion of Children’s Church during the 11am worship service.

Groups and Solos – Do you enjoy singing solos or do you sing with a group? We need you to participate in worship services.

Youth Ministry

Our youth ministry for teens, grade 6-12, exists to seek, discover, establish, and grow relationships with all students, showing the love of God and a servants’ heart by offering a safe and welcoming family environment.
